Mattress tests in Switzerland: what they really measure
«Testsieger», «best mattress in Switzerland»: these labels do not all mean the same thing. Here is what Kassensturz, the FRC and the SIQT measure, with their dates and limits.

Kassensturz and K-Tipp, November 2021
Foam mattresses from well-known brands, under CHF 900, were lab-tested. TÜV Rheinland rolled each model 60,000 times to simulate 8 to 10 years of use: all scored «good» or «very good» for durability. Differences were in ergonomics. Mattresses at CHF 700–800 did slightly better, but a CHF 250 model was already «good». The winner was Robusta’s Elanbasic II; the top three were also the most expensive, all Swiss-made.
Kassensturz and Saldo, December 2013
Eleven mattresses under CHF 1,000 (CHF 199 to 990) were tested: eight «good», three «very good». The cheapest, at nearly CHF 200, scored 5.3; the runner-up, at nearly CHF 300, 5.5. Not all suited side sleepers, who need enough sinkage at the shoulders.
The SIQT «Swiss Brand of the Year» ranking
This is not a lab test but an online survey of consumers aged 18 to 80 (August–September 2025, 510,122 ratings of 1,262 brands across 99 categories). Three scores, from 1 to 10: satisfaction, perceived quality and value for money, for brands with at least 100 ratings per question. Only the top of the ranking is published (for mattresses, 8 names out of 26). It measures how a brand is perceived, not a model. Figures for catalogue brands are on each brand page. The 2024/25 edition (surveyed July–August 2024) and the 2023/24 edition (May–August 2023) are cited the same way, from that edition’s SIQT page. The 2026 branch monitor, dated 1 July 2026, rates online shops (satisfaction, customer service, value for money), not mattresses.
SIQT laboratory tests of one model
The SIQT also publishes individual laboratory tests: a 140 kg roller for 30,000 cycles, then a load at 37 °C and 80% humidity. As of 12 October 2026, two mattresses are online. Emma’s Diamond Deluxe, tested in 90 × 200 cm and published on 15 February 2023, scores 5.6/6. It is not in our catalogue. The Pro Thermo Hybrid II, which the SIQT identifies as the Emma Original Pro, tested in 90 × 200 cm at firmness H2 and published on 16 September 2024, scores 5.5/6 (comfort 5.3, durability 5.8, handling 5.3, product information 5.9). That score appears only on that model’s page.
FRC, February 2017
The FRC’s online comparative-test tool, checked on 12 October 2026, does not include a mattress test. The archive of 2 February 2017 compares 16 adult and children’s mattresses. The score tables come from European tests and stay in the member e-paper. The public method: a 140 kg roller for 30,000 passes, to simulate 8 to 10 years. Side-sleeping support was the weak point. Two mattresses sold as firm were measured soft: the Swissflex Versa 20 Geltex inside (very soft) and the Ikea Matrand (soft). Neither is in our catalogue. The buying guide of the same day, with UFC-Que Choisir, covers 39 models sold between 300 and 2,400 euros over four years: price was tied neither to performance nor to durability, and memory foam showed no laboratory advantage. Stated firmness is the manufacturer’s. On 22 February 2017 the FRC also advises photographing the model and the label, reporting a smell within seven days, and choosing a baby cover washable at 60 °C.
Older FRC archives
On 3 December 2012 the FRC relays a Stiftung Warentest foam-mattress test. The public ranking names the Diamona Perfect Fit Plus and the Metzeler Fashion Tubes 126, and the Ikea Sultan Fonnes as a cheap model that ranked fairly well but suits only slight women. These models are not in our catalogue. The article says every tested model gave off volatile organic compounds. “Un matelas de rêve” of 26 March 2013 is a buying checklist, not a comparative test.
How to read a «test» before you buy
Check the date, the exact model name and the size tested, and the method: laboratory measurement, brand survey or shop score. A table reserved for members is not reproduced here. A brand score says nothing about your sleeping position and is not copied onto a model page.
